ANNUAL AWARD OF EXCELLENCE LUNCHEON
– November 14, 2012, 12noon
Come join us in recognizing those who will be honored with the Award of Excellence from the SPHS Alumni Association. The Banquet will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at noon at the Waterfall Room at Swan Caterers. The ticket cost is $27.50 each.

GENERAL EVENTS OF INTEREST TO THE SPHS COMMUNITY:
Friday, October 19, 2012, 3:00pm – Home Football Game, Southern v. Edison
A group of former Southern Alumni Football players will be present at the Southern vs. Edison football game on Friday, October 19, 2012 at Bigler Field, 10th & Bigler Sts. Come join them in support of our football team.
Sunday, October 28, 2012, 4:00pm – Annual Cavaliere Concert.
This year’s annual Cavaliere Concert is being held at St. Neumann Goretti High School in South Phila. (10th & Moore) on October 28, 2012 at 4PM. Tickets are 15.00 general admission, $12.00 for seniors, $5.00 for students & $ 15.00 purchased at door. Please contact Giovanna Cavaliere (215-334-0529) for further details.
Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 10:00am – Unveiling of Historical Marker for Dr. Israel Goldstein.
Please join us at the official unveiling of the Historical Marker in tribute to Dr. Israel Goldstein on November 13, 2010 at 10a.m. Dr. Goldstein was a member of the January 1911 Class (aka the Third Graduating Class) of Southern, and was the first Recipient of an SPHS Alumni Association scholarship award. In addition, Dr. Goldstein co-founded Brandeis University, and was an activist for a State of Israel. Thanks to the hard work of Celeste Morello, an author, and Philadelphia historian, and the support of Southern’s Principal Otis Hackney, the historical marker now is situated in its rightful locale, our Alma Mater. The next time you are on Broad Street near the school, take a moment to stop and look at the historical marker (located atop a pole on Broad Street between Jackson Street and Snyder Avenue at the entrance to the promenade leading to the front steps of Southern).

Come support Southern’s Football Team on the Annual Thanksgiving Day Southern vs. Neumann game at Bigler Field, 10th and Bigler Streets. All are welcome.
HOW YOU CAN HELP CURRENT SPHS STUDENTS
We ask that all of you be on the lookout for future announcements of events such as CAREER DAY at the school where you can help current Southern students learn about your career field.
In addition, if you and/or your company can provide a venue for SPHS seniors to complete their 15 hour Community Service requirements, for please contact Robert Ambrose, Senior Seminar Teacher, at [email protected], or contact him at 215-952-6220.
HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR ALMA MATER IN GENERAL
Volunteer opportunities abound for Alumni to help our Alma Mater! Below are just a few areas in which your help will be greatly appreciated.
1. Greeter at special functions.
2. Office assistance helping with diploma search.
3. Library assistance at direction of the librarian, Ms. Mead;
4. School Store retail assistance.
5. Assistance in the Archives Room.
We will do our best to work around your schedule. Even if your schedule only permits you to help once or twice per month, we’d love to have you.

Going forward, when mailing the annual Newsletter, if your Newsletter is returned as undeliverable, in order for us to send you another hard copy, you must send us a self-addressed, postage-paid, large 9×13 envelope.
